A Series of Unfortunate Dreams
A few nights ago, I had my most recurrent nightmare: that I lost a whole row of teeth which wrenched themselves out one by one and then all at once.
Two nights ago, I dreamt that a marked copy of my thesis was returned to me. I held it with great trepidation, knowing full well that I need an A- grade or higher for my expected class of honours (this is true). Oddly enough, each chapter was graded, and I was incredibly relieved to find that the first one got an A+, with positive comments in its margins. The second chapter got an A-. The third, however, was a C+, and the fifth (I don't think I saw the fourth) was graded 'F5', with some Simon Cowell-esque disparaging remarks about how rubbish my conclusion was. The overall grade, on the last page of the bibliography, read: 'B'. Needless to say I was horrified and extremely disappointed.
Last night, I had the most bizarre nightmare yet: that I was being hunted down by members of some shady organisation. It began with fleeing from a small eatery at night, running down unfamiliar (but distinctly suburban Singaporean) streets and finally boarding a bus. My girlfriend happened to be seated near the back of that bus, and we spent an indeterminate amount of time darting furtively from one location to another. As dreams go, we inexplicably ended up at the eatery where the dream began, perhaps expecting that to be the last place the organisation's members would expect to find me. No such luck. They were just at the next table, and halfway through our respective meals, one of them stood up and made to throw a molotov cocktail at my girlfriend and I. I grabbed her wrist and we flew through the kitchen, narrowly avoiding the explosion. I then enterprisingly snatched two knives from the knife rack and asked her to take a third for self-defence. We fled into the night again, running as far away from pursuers' shouts as we could. I remember us making superhuman vertiginous leaps down the backs of buildings, sliding down interminably long slopes, all in an effort to gain more ground. The dream ended at some vague point.
Well, there you have it. The content of the dreams per se do not surprise me; what I am alarmed by is the fact that I had these nightmares on consecutive nights. Is there something troubling me that I'm not consciously aware of?
